How to Come Up With a Username for Your Art Account

Your Artist Account Name is Part of Your Make

Are you thinking most starting an Instagram account merely for your art, but have no idea what to name it? Obviously, names are of import. Your name sends a message about your fine art and who yous are as an artist. You desire to nowadays yourself as a professional, but you can still have fun with it.

Nobody can tell you exactly what your name should be. You have to choose what feels accurate to you, but I've put together a list of things to consider while brainstorming. As y'all go through this mail service, have a pen and piece of newspaper nearby and start jotting down key words that come to heed that could perhaps become role of your new Instagram business relationship name.

Basic Artist Account Name Anatomy

Before getting started, people will often cull a few different name structures for their account:

  • Artist's legal proper noun
  • Legal name with creative discipline attached (art, drawing, photography, etc.)
  • Artist's nickname or pseudonym
  • Art related brand name (doesn't include artist's name)
  • General creative brand name (doesn't have to be art related)

When I showtime started my online presence in 2014, I choose the concluding option for my artist account name because it was the right fit for my creative identity, and @messyeverafter was born. Only permit's recall about yous here:

ane. Consider your personality.

Yous are unique. Even if you don't believe it, you have to start telling yourself that you have something different to offer your audience. And you can include a little hint of this uniqueness in your name. Your proper name can fix you apart from others past capturing your personality.

Think almost who you are as a person. Are yous fun, carefree, or spunky? Are y'all serious, dark, laid dorsum, or funny? What parts of your personality come through your fine art? How exercise you interact with people in person? What's your communication mode?

Information technology might even be helpful to talk to a friend and have them describe you.

two. Consider your art mode.

What kind of fine art do you brand? Are you a painter, fluid artist, illustrator, graphic designer, etc.? What discipline thing do you lot focus on? Nature, portraits, animals, abstract? Or do y'all create annihilation and everything under the art umbrella?

You tin can use words like "fine art", "cartoon", and "illustration" in your name to explain what you brand. Or, you can employ your subject thing.

3. Consider the area of the fine art world you desire to enter.

All artists do not operate in the aforementioned areas of the fine art globe. There are many places to find success with fine art like in galleries, museums, craft fairs, art fairs, flea markets, digital platforms, and more. Your name may communicate which surface area you fit into.

If you lot are going for a gallery/museum career path, your real name is probably almost appropriate. It's clean and professional person. If y'all are having fun in more casual spaces, y'all tin get more creative with your name.

four. Your real name is perfectly appropriate.

Creative person'southward real names are often their brand names. If you feel a close connexion to your name, and then go alee and utilise that as your social media username.

If your proper name is taken, consider using a catamenia betwixt names, or add together a creative discipline like fine art, illustrations, blueprint, paintings, drawings, doodles, etc..

Ex: "firstlast.art", "firstlastdesign", "starting time.final", "firstlast"

five. Consider a proper name with a deeper meaning.

You don't take to use your real name. Nor do y'all don't have to include anything involving art. Get creative and make people retrieve nigh the significant a little more.

You tin look into old mythologies, scientific discipline, astrology, and more. Think of something that connects to yous and your work, but requires a little more than thought to empathise. Or fifty-fifty names that involve a childhood nickname, or within jokes and stories. Think about your backstory.

6. Make it easy to say out loud.

This is a personal dominion of mine while I'thousand out at events or chatting with people about what I do. How would your name audio if you lot ran out of all of your business cards and just had to say your social usernames out loud to customers?

If y'all accept a agglomeration of symbols or numbers, things can get a trivial long.

Ex: "My Insta is jenny dot rainbow underscore three five dot art"

Or: "My Insta is jenny rainbow art"

It's a unproblematic thing, but information technology helps avoid bad-mannered "wait, where is the underscore?" types of conversations.

7. Cheque for like accounts.

Take reward of the Instagram search bar and starting time looking up the names yous've thought of. If a name you thought of is taken by another artist, brainstorm other names. I practise non recommend simply adding underscores or periods to a proper name that is taken to get in "unique" unless it is your actual legal name.

This will help yous avoid any complaints from fellow creators in the future. I tin can speak from experience (considering there are currently over 40 accounts on Instagram that play off @messyeverafter), information technology'southward not pleasant to have your name taken. As well, don't fall in love with a proper name that someone else has trademark rights to if you plan on using your account for a concern.

8. Bank check all social media platforms.

Once you find a practiced name, you're going to desire to plan for the future. Cheque Twitter, YouTube, Facebook pages, Tumblr, Reddit, TikTok, and .com domain names. Even consider searching Trademark databases and your land's registered business organisation names.

You're edifice a presence that will terminal for years, so make sure y'all tin snatch up the same name across all the platforms you can to make it easier for followers to detect you no thing where they expect.

Recall: You lot have a little wiggle room for alter if you lot realize you lot don't like your chosen proper name.

Any proper noun yous decide on today doesn't have to exist your name forever. If you have no idea who y'all are as an artist right now, you can change your name once yous figure it out. I encourage y'all not to change your name often, and not to alter your name once your following starts to grow, but y'all tin re-make yourself if you really feel you need to.

Once y'all establish your branding and have enough people who know your name, it's really hard to break abroad from that first name. I'm not saying y'all tin't do it, though. I know I'yard probably going to have an identity crisis once more, so I don't want to shut that door completely.
